History of Guzelcamli

Guzelcamli in the district of Aydın is situated 25 km from Kusadasi on the Dilek Penninsula and next to the National Park.

Guzelcamli village officially became a town in 1992.

The registered resident population is approximately 10,000 but in the summer tourist season the population increases to around 50,000.

In times of the Ottoman Empire the village was a Greek village and went by the name of Rumçamlı. On the 7 september 1922 the war of independence saw Turkey and Greece re-draw their national maps. in 1924 the Greek families moved to Samos and the Turkish families moved back to the area and re-named it Guzelcamlı

In ancient times Guzelcamli was at the centre of Panionion Political Union – created to resist the Pers Empire from trying to hold Anotolia by force - founded by the 12 Iyon Cities that were meeting and making the rite at the alter of Poseidon Helikonios . That alter rests nearby in the SamsOn Mountains know then as Mykale, which was discovered in 1957 by Gerhard Kleiner.

This city was the main city of the Ionian region. During the war called Mykale War between the Pers Empire and the Panionions in 479 B.C. the entire fleet of the Pers Navy was sunk just of the Dilek Penninsula

After these wars these cities become part of a military alliance to which many cities joined.
